Tentative Program Dates: 5/23/24 – 6/21/24

Film in Britain offers students the opportunity to study film history and film production in two of Europe’s most vibrant cities, London and Edinburgh. This five-week program, led by Professors Bill Vincent and Swarnavel Pillai, will combine the academic study of film, film production, and exposure to London as a cinematic city. The production component will allow students to study screenwriting, camera and sound technique, and film directing.  Filming will take place in some of the most cinematically attractive locations in London, incorporating famous landmarks like the London Eye, Brighton Beach Pier, the Hill Garden and Pergola, and more. In the studies component, students will screen films at the British Film Institute and all over London cinemas, with classroom visits from world famous filmmakers and theorists.

Our program features talks and screenings by contemporary British filmmakers, and will encourage students to participate in the contemporary experimental film and media scene taking place at institutions like the Barbican, the Tate Modern, the National Film Theater, and the Serpentine Gallery.

Student housing in London is provided by our on-site partner, ACCENT International.  Housing will be in furnished, shared flats (British for apartments) within travel zones 1 and 2 – the central area of the city— a short commute by tube (subway) or bus from the ACCENT Study Centre, where classrooms are located.  Each flat includes a kitchen, living room, bedrooms and at least one bathroom.  Kitchens come equipped with a stove, microwave, refrigerator, toaster, and kettle.  Pots, pans, cooking utensils, dishes, and cutlery are also provided.  Bedrooms will be shared by 2 or 3 students, and will always be single sex, though flats may be mixed gender.  Bed linens are provided, but students are advised to bring their own towel, or be prepared to purchase one upon arrival.  Flats also provide Wi-Fi connectivity, and free laundry facilities either in unit or in communal areas of the building.

Exact locations cannot be guaranteed, but all flats will be in safe neighborhoods in zones 1 and 2.   If needed for visa and immigration purposes, students should use the address of the ACCENT Study Centre:

12 Bedford Square
London, WC1B 3JA

Please note that late withdrawals from London programs (within 8 weeks of departure) will incur cancellation charges up to the full cost of student housing, in accordance with the Study Abroad cancellation policy, as housing is a non-recoverable expense within that time.

Before departure for the program, students should expect to receive some direct communication from ACCENT International, including some online forms which should be read carefully as they contain important information regarding London and program housing. These forms must be completed before students depart for their program.

The program fee for Summer 2023 is not finalized, but will be around $5950, which includes:

  • Housing
  • Transportation during program
  • All group program activities, trips, and meals
  • Students share of fixed program costs
  • Screening stipend for individual film viewing

What the fee does not cover, which students will have to budget for:

  • Airfare
  • Transportation to and from airport
  • Class books and materials
  • Passport
  • Tuition
  • Worth The Cost

While the fee is relatively high among all study abroad programs, it reflects the high cost of living in London and is on par with all other London study abroad programs. We believe it is well worth the investment in your education to study abroad, and we will work with students to help find scholarship and funding opportunities.
